New Generation RFID & Barcode Scanning Technologies for Hospital

The Hospital Convention 2008 was successfully completed on 6 May 2008. The main theme of the 2 days fair this year is ‘A New Era of Patient Care’ which aims at propounding health system changes which embrace innovation, improvements and modernization at multiple levels and which will meet patient’s satisfaction. As one of the exhibitor of providing information technology solution, MillionTech had displayed various new generation RFID and Barcode Scanning Technologies for Hospital during the show.

1) Wristband Printing Solution  

Wristband Printing is a hot topic in Public Hospital in Hong Kong currently. The company had displayed SATO CT series printers, which consists of anti-bacterial outer case to prevent the spread of infection. Wristbands are made of non-irritating material, which is stretch and water resistant, yet lightweight and flexible for maximum comfort. Patient’s information is encoded into a 1D / 2D barcode and be printed on the wristband in forms of Thermal Transfer with the SATO CT series printers. As for the traditional wristband application, patient’s information has to be written on a small paper card and be inserted inside the pocket adhered on it. However, the writing word is easily washed away that avoid the accuracy of patient identification and increase staff’s workload. The printable type wristband is more durable and the application of barcode technology ensures proper ID verification and reduces error of ID checks.

 2) 2D Code Application for Unique Patient Identification (UPI)

With the adoption of Quick Response Code (QR-Code) technology in the hospital, patient’s data can be stored in the code (Up to 7,089 characters) with size just one-tenth the space of a traditional bar code and be read in high speed. The DENSO BHT-304QWB 2D Code Handy Scanner features with high scanning speed and wide range scanning function, which is drop resistance, dust and waterproof and can stand for long operation hour. Patient’s information is stored into the QR code and be scanned by the handy scanner for easy ID verification of patient. The BHT-304QWB has the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication interface, that can link up with the portable label printer AIDA3200C for right time job recording. This ensures accurate Patient Identification and clear workflow management. The system devices are applied by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority provided by MillionTECH since the year of 2007.

3) RFID Technology for Hospital

The Aeroscout Real Time Location System in the hospital allows nurses to track with the location and movement of babies, patient, equipment and location etc. There are different Wi-Fi based active RFID tags that are built with temperature sensor, motion sensor, temper proof and temperature sensor to monitor temperature variation of the medical products, to track with equipment’s location and patient’s movement. The call button serves as a safety alarm for patient in case of emergency. The technology is currently applied in various hospitals and health care center worldwide.

4) Stock Control Management for Hospital

The adoption of barcode technology allows hospital to enhance the stock control efficiency, such as medicine, equipment and medical instruments etc. The CASIO DT-X7 handy scanner is an innovative design for Stock Management purpose. The voice-based guidance handheld terminal is easy to use and the Human-Centred Design allows comfortable scanning. The device features of Wireless Communications Option through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, assets can be track and data is communicated at a real-time basis. The improvement of stock control management enhances efficiency and increase staff’s job satisfaction.
