Follow by the supply of Unique Patient Identification (UPI) System to Hospital Authority of Hong Kong (HA) in 2007, MillionTECH has successively provided the barcode systems to the HA with 250 sets of Denso BHT-304QB barcode terminals and AIDA 3200C portable printer, for improving the mortuary services at 35 subordinated mortuaries at public hospitals in Hong Kong.

"The system was a success that helped prevent mortuary mix-ups”, said Lee Kam-cheong, chairman of the authority’s steering group for pathology information technology at the recent HA press conference dated 15th July.

Under the new system, patients admitted to hospitals are given a wristband printed with a two-dimensional bar code (QR Code), which contained detailed information about a patient, including their name, sex and identity card numbers, while one-dimensional barcodes could carry only a set of identity card numbers.

Mechanism

When a patient dies, ward worker print out a document with the patient’s personal particulars. Workers would check the body’s identity by scanning the two-dimensional barcode on the wristband and verifying that information with the patient’s identity document.

The family of the deceased is issued a collection from printed with the same bar code as that on the patient’s wristband. When mortuary officers receive the body, they would cross-check by scanning the two-dimensional barcode on the wristband and the identity document again before giving bodies to families.

About QR Code

It is well accepted in Japan and trends to apply in different industries. Its application includes in sales management of contacts lens, spectacles, etc. The reasons of popularity are high data capacity of QR code, it is up to 7,089 characters. Small space of QR code would carry much data, a 10% sized QR code can carry the same amount of data as a bar code can. Additionally, QR code is multi direction high-speed reading, 30 symbols per second can be read. It would carry Chinese fonts, and would damage proof, even 30% damaged code can be read.
